Implantable Hearing Devices

In some cases, traditional hearing aids aren’t enough to meet someone’s communication needs. At Wooster ENT, we offer two different types of implantable hearing devices.

Cochlear’s Baha is for those with a permanent conductive hearing loss, commonly caused by problems with the ear drum or the bones in the middle ear. This device uses vibrations to bypass the damaged portion of the the hearing system and directly stimulates the organ of hearing, called the cochlea.

Cochlear’s Nucleus 6 implant is a hearing solution for severe to profound hearing losses. To qualify for a cochlear implant, a person must have very poor speech understanding, even with hearing aids. The cochlear implant has an implanted portion as well as an external device. The cochlear implant bypasses the damaged inner ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve. The cochlear implant is a completely different way of hearing, but can restore sound awareness or even speech understanding to people with severe to profound hearing losses.

If your are interested in surgically implanted hearing devices, or have questions on if you are a candidate, please call and ask to speak to an audiologist. You can also visit Cochlear’s website for more information.
